If you find yourself with heavy workloads when it comes to splitting and are after a high-quality and dependable splitter that will last through many years of hard use, then the Swisher 28-Ton Gas Log Splitter is the one for you. The Swisher 28-Tonner comes equipped with a Briggs & Stratton engine which carries a great reputation in terms of reliability and power. You’re guaranteed maximum splitting performance with a 2-stage heavy duty pump. The ability to split in a horizontal or vertical position
also saves a lot of time, especially when it comes to splitting large, awkward size logs as you don’t need to struggle to lift them as high as you would on a simple horizontal machine. When operating in the vertical position, an additional vertical beam lock has been installed for extra peace of mind! The standard log cradles either side of the beam ensure logs don’t roll off the side of the machine once cut, as the majority of logs are caught before they fall off.
Unique to the Swisher 28-Ton Gas Log Splitter is the “Exclusive Cold Weather Clutch” which still ensures an easy start regardless of the freezing temperatures outside. It’s great to find a splitter on the market that is 100% made in USA which seems to be a rarity these days! It’s also good to know that as the splitter is manufactured in USA that it’s road tested and customized for classic American outdoor environments. The large 2.5 gallon hydraulic tank is rust resistant which is an added luxury given how much time the average splitter is stored in an outdoor covered area and of course when it is used so frequently in the rugged outdoors.
The Swisher 28 Tonner allows you to split logs up to 25 inch in diameter and loves to have the most gnarly and knotted logs thrown at it to chew through them. The fitted 2inch ball hitch and safety chains makes moving from site to site a breeze and allows for a maximum road travel speed of up to 45MPH.

Pros
28 tons of sheer splitting force and 11.5 horse power engine designed by Briggs & Strotton will almost guarantee no gnarly and knotted logs get past the Swisher Log Splitter. The exclusive cold weather clutch is certainly a stand out feature that will save multiple starts in freezing temperatures.
Cons
The only downside that can be mentioned would be the price tag of just over $1,500.00. It’s a lot to invest in a splitter but the Swisher 28-Tonner is certainly aimed at those that are frequently splitting.

Using The Log Splitter
Follow the user manual that came with your machine to set up correctly and ensure all hydraulic fluids and oils are topped up and ready for use. Set the splitter up in the position where you wish to operate from, ensuring the area is flat for sturdy operation and free of any obstacles. Place blocks under the wheels for added stability and security. Ensure the suction port is on the lower side of the splitter. Move the throttle control to “fast” and press the primer bulb a few times. Then set the choke to the “on” position if using. Pull the handle of the starter up to three times to start, pumping the primer bulb further if it won’t start after three attempts. Once the machine fires up, close off the choke if you initially used it and keep the throttle on the “fast” position for maximum splitting force.
Place the log on the beam firmly against the foot plate, then use the valve lever to drive the cylinder into the push block against the log. Hold down the lever until the log is split or until it reaches full extension, in which case re-position the log to split again. Avoid bottoming out the cylinder to extend the life of your machine.
Make sure that whenever you move your splitter you turn the fuel shot-off valve into the “off” position. When towing ensure the support leg is in the travel position and the coupling is secure. You should tow only up to a top speed of 45MPH.
The Bottom Line: Swisher 28-Ton Gas Log Splitter
Couple the dual horizontal/vertical splitting abilities with the in-built tow ball hitch feature and 2-stage pump and you’re guaranteed to spend far less time setting up for operation of the splitter and more time actually splitting. The 10.5HP Briggs & Stratton equipped engine is designed to go the extra mile and is a brand with a great reputation for high quality products.
It’s a large investment to be spending just over $1,500.00 but it defeats the purpose for a regular user of a log splitting machine to buy a splitter with a cheaper price tag to only have it break down after heavy use. The Swisher 28-Ton Gas Log Splitter is designed for the serious log splitters and its setup and easy to use operation is well thought out and heavily trialed before release into the market.
